The Most Expensive Money Mistakes Are the Ones You Can’t See

I had three conversations in three weeks that I keep thinking about. A couple with €600,000 sitting in cash, in a bank account, doing nothing. Had it tracked the S&P 500 over the previous 12 months, they would have been roughly €180,000 richer. Not because they made a bad decision. Because they made no decision at all.

Another couple, both in tech, both earning well, both eligible for around €20,000 a year in pension tax relief between them. Neither of them knew it existed. That is not €20,000 once. That is €20,000 for every year they did not know.

A guy holding €500,000 in his company’s stock. The same shares were worth over €1 million eighteen months earlier. Half a million gone, held on to, waiting for a recovery that might never come. The market does not care what your shares used to be worth. Only what they are worth today. Every day you do not sell, you are choosing to bet that money on your company all over again.

Three different people. Three different problems. Not one of them thought they had one. The cash couple felt safe. The tax-relief couple thought everything was handled by their adviser. The stock guy was waiting for a comeback. They were not worried. They were not looking for help. You cannot see what you do not know.

So here is a question. What is the thing in your financial life you keep meaning to sort out but have not? Can you put a number on what it is costing you? If you cannot, that is exactly the point.

Every person I have ever sat down with has had a blind spot. A pension invested in the wrong fund. A relief they did not know they could claim. A decision they kept putting off. On their own, these things do not look like much. Over time they compound: into thousands in missed gains, tens of thousands in missed tax, sometimes hundreds of thousands in lost net worth. That is expensive.
