You Probably Overpaid Your Tax. Here’s How to Claim It Back.

Most people have no idea this money exists. They assume their employer has it handled. Or their accountant. Or Revenue. Usually nobody does. I have now uncovered more than €1,000,000 in tax refunds for clients, and the recurring pattern is the same: money sitting there, unclaimed, every single year.

When I say the word “pension”, most people switch off. It sounds like something for your 60-year-old self. Grey hair, bad knees, a long way from now. But in Ireland, a pension is the single best wealth-building tool you have as an employee. Not because of what it does when you retire. Because of what it does right now.

The Irish government gives you generous tax breaks to fund your own retirement. At the higher rate, that is 40% back on every euro you contribute. You put in €10,000, you get €4,000 back from Revenue, this year. Most tech employees never claim it. Not because they do not qualify, but because nobody told them they could. Your employer did not mention it. Your bank did not flag it. And the government is not exactly shouting about the thousands they could be giving away. So it is up to you to figure it out.

A few things worth knowing: how to calculate exactly how much you can claim back from last year, the deadlines that apply, the common mistakes that cost people their refund (I have made them all), and why your default pension investment is probably wrong.

Here is what to do. Work out how much you can still claim from the tax you paid last year. Because getting a few thousand euro back feels good. But turning that refund into a plan that builds lasting wealth, that is where everything changes.
