94 years old. $160B rich. This is the investing advice Buffett swears by

Big news in business this week: Warren Buffett is retiring as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.

At age 94, he's finally stepping down with over €160,000,000,000 to his name.

Clearly, he wasn't working for the money. He just loved the game.

There are so many lessons we can take from Buffett. But this one might be my favourite:

The $1 million bet that proved a simple truth

In 2008, Buffett made a bold wager: That a low-cost S&P 500 index fund would outperform a hand-picked group of hedge funds over 10 years.

His opponent? Ted Seides. A Wall Street pro managing $3.5 billion.

Each side put up $320,000 in Treasury bonds (to grow to $1M by 2018).

If Seides won, the money would go to a hedge fund-backed children's charity. If Buffett won, it would go to Girls Inc., a nonprofit for young women.

At first, buffett was losing

In the 2008 crash:

• Buffett's fund dropped -37%

• Seides' hedge funds dropped -20%

Buffett was trailing badly.

But he stayed calm.

And he was right.

Final score (2008-2017)

• Buffett's Vanguard Index Fund: +126%

• Hedge Funds: +36%

None of the hedge funds beat the index.

The culprits? Fees. Complexity. Ego.

As Buffett said:

"I'm sure the hedge fund managers were honest and smart. But the results were dismal."

The real winner?

Girls Inc. received $2.2 million (thanks to a clever asset switch mid-bet).

Today, they run a program for young women in a house called... Protégé House. Named after the firm that lost the bet.

Sweet justice.

What this means for you

Warren Buffett is the most famous investor of all time but his lesson applies to anyone.

You don't need:

• To pick the next Google

• A fancy money manager

• To be right every year

• Low fees
